How to replace a tubeless rim strip without leaks
A tubeless wheel depends on a continuous airtight barrier between the tire cavity and the spoke holes. When that barrier is damaged, poorly fitted, or incompatible with the rim, sealant may seep into the rim bed, pressure can fall overnight, and the tire may refuse to seat properly. Replacing the rim strip is often a straightforward repair, but small installation errors can create persistent leaks.
The term “rim strip” can describe two different products. Some wheels use a molded tubeless strip that sits tightly in the rim channel, while others use adhesive tubeless rim tape. Both systems perform the same basic job, but they require different fitting methods. Confirm which design your wheel uses before ordering a replacement.
A clean work area, the correct width, and careful pressure around the valve hole matter more than speed. Choose a compatible rim strip
Start by identifying the rim’s internal width and the type of tubeless system it was designed to use. Measure the flat section of the rim bed rather than the outside width of the rim. The replacement tape generally needs to be slightly wider than the bed so its edges climb the sidewalls and seal beyond the spoke holes. A strip that is too narrow may leave a spoke hole exposed; one that is excessively wide can fold upward and interfere with tire installation.
Use tubeless-specific rim tape or a molded strip intended for your wheel. Ordinary cloth rim tape, electrical tape, and general-purpose duct tape may contain materials that absorb sealant, lift at the edges, or fail under tire pressure. Check the rim manufacturer’s width recommendation when possible, especially with deep-section carbon rims or wheels with unusual bead shelves.
The valve should also match the rim profile. A standard conical tubeless valve may work on a shallow box-section rim, while a curved or asymmetrical rim may need a shaped rubber base. Reusing a valve is acceptable only if the rubber base is undamaged and the threaded body is clean.
Remove the old material carefully
Deflate the tire completely and remove one bead from the rim. If sealant is still liquid, pour or wipe it into a container rather than allowing it to spread across the work surface. Dried latex can be peeled away, but avoid scraping aggressively with a metal tool because scratches around the spoke holes can become leak paths.
For adhesive tape, lift an edge near the valve hole and pull it back slowly. Removing the strip in one piece makes it easier to see whether sealant has migrated underneath. If the tape tears, remove every remaining section. Small overlapping fragments can prevent new tape from lying flat and may create a raised channel that leaks.
A molded rim strip may require more force to release from the bead shelves. Work around the rim with plastic tire levers, keeping the lever away from the valve opening. Inspect the strip after removal. A stretched, split, or permanently deformed strip should be replaced rather than repositioned.
Clean and inspect the rim bed
The rim must be dry, smooth, and free from sealant residue before fitting new tape. Wipe the channel with a clean, lint-free cloth and an appropriate solvent recommended by the rim or tape manufacturer. Isopropyl alcohol is commonly suitable for many aluminum rims, but some carbon finishes and printed surfaces can react to solvents, so test a small hidden area first.
Pay special attention to the spoke holes, the central channel, and both bead shelves. Hardened sealant around a spoke hole can hold the tape away from the metal, while a sharp burr can puncture it. If you find a damaged eyelet, crack, or deep gouge, stop and have the rim assessed rather than trying to conceal the problem with extra layers of tape.
The inspection stage is also a good time to check the valve hole. It should be clean and free of old adhesive. A narrow strip of tape left across the hole can make the valve difficult to install and may stop the rubber base from compressing evenly.

Apply the tubeless tape evenly
Begin several centimeters away from the valve hole, usually on the opposite side of the rim. Keep firm tension on the roll and press the tape into the center channel as you work around the wheel. The tape should advance in a straight line, with its edges sitting at the same height on both sides. Do not stretch it so tightly that it becomes narrow; moderate tension is enough to remove slack.
Use your thumb to press the tape down after every short section. Follow the deepest part of the rim bed first, then smooth outward toward the sidewalls. Wrinkles, trapped air pockets, and crossed edges are common causes of tubeless air leaks. If a crease forms, peel the tape back immediately and correct it rather than hoping tire pressure will flatten it.
Overlap the final end by several inches. The overlap should be smooth and firmly bonded, with no abrupt step. On a rim with a pronounced center channel, a single layer is usually sufficient when the correct width is used. Adding multiple layers can change the bead-seat diameter and make the tire unusually difficult to mount or seat.
At the valve location, press the tape down firmly but do not cut the hole until the adhesive has settled. Use a small pick or a sharp awl to make a neat opening just large enough for the valve stem. A large slit weakens the seal around the valve and allows sealant to creep under the tape.
Fit the valve and tire
Insert the tubeless valve from inside the rim and make sure its rubber base sits flat against the tape. Tighten the external locknut by hand while holding the valve body in place. It should be snug enough to compress the rubber, but excessive force can deform the seal or damage a carbon rim. Do not use pliers unless the valve manufacturer specifically permits it.
Install one tire bead completely, then add the recommended amount of tubeless sealant. If you prefer to pour sealant through the valve, remove the valve core with a core tool and confirm that the valve is open. Fit the second bead carefully, keeping the remaining tight section in the rim’s deepest channel. This creates enough slack to finish mounting without levering against the tape.
Before inflating, inspect both beads to ensure they are inside the rim channel and that the valve has not shifted. Inflate with a compressor, charger, or high-volume floor pump. The beads should snap into place with several distinct pops. Stay within the tire and rim pressure limits while seating the tire; never exceed the lower maximum listed by either component.
Once the beads are seated, rotate and shake the wheel in several directions. This distributes sealant around the bead interface and across the rim strip. Leave the wheel inflated for a few minutes, then check whether the pressure is holding before installing it on the bike.
Diagnose leaks before riding
A slow leak should be located rather than masked with more sealant. Brush soapy water around both beads, the valve, and the entire sidewall area. Bubbles indicate escaping air, while a wet patch on the spoke side can point to a rim-tape failure. If the leak is at the valve, release the pressure and check that the rubber base is centered and the locknut is correctly tightened.
If air escapes from one point along the rim bed, the tape may have a wrinkle, an unsealed overlap, or contamination underneath. Remove the tire and replace the tape rather than applying a small patch over a questionable area. A patch can work as an emergency roadside measure, but it is less reliable than a clean, continuous strip for regular use.
If the tire loses pressure evenly through the tread, the sealant may be old, insufficient, or too viscous to reach small pores. Refresh the sealant according to the product’s service interval. A porous tire casing can take several hours and repeated wheel movement to seal, particularly when it is being converted from an inner-tube setup.
Keep the seal airtight
Correct installation prevents most problems, but routine checks help catch failures before they become roadside repairs. Pressure loss after a tire change is normal during the initial sealing period, yet a wheel that repeatedly loses a large amount of air usually has a specific fault at the tape, valve, bead, or tire casing.
Use these habits when fitting or maintaining tubeless wheels:
- Store replacement tape in a cool, dry place so its adhesive remains stable.
- Inspect the rim strip whenever a tire lever has slipped deeply beneath the bead.

After the wheel has passed the soapy-water test, leave it overnight at a safe pressure and measure it again in the morning. A small change may come from temperature, but a substantial drop deserves another inspection. Once the wheel holds air, ride gently for the first few miles and recheck the valve, bead, and pressure afterward.
A properly fitted rim strip should remain invisible during normal use: no bubbling sealant at the spokes, no hissing at the valve, and no unexplained pressure loss.
