How to replace a broken shifter cable on the road

A snapped shifter cable can leave a perfectly rideable bicycle stuck in one gear. The failure often happens without warning: the lever suddenly moves freely, the derailleur stops responding, or the cable end pulls out of the rear derailleur. Although it is inconvenient, this repair is usually manageable with a few compact tools and a replacement inner cable.
