Replacing the bearing assembly can restore a pedal without the cost of buying a complete replacement. The work is manageable with basic workshop tools, but the exact procedure depends on whether the pedal uses loose ball bearings, a cartridge bearing, or a combination of bearings and bushings.

A careful rebuild also protects the pedal axle and body from further wear. The goal is not simply to pack in fresh grease, but to clean every contact surface, install the correct components, and set the bearing adjustment so the spindle turns freely without lateral movement.

Identify the pedal bearing design

Before ordering parts, inspect the pedal and find its model number if one is available. Many flat pedals use a cartridge bearing near the outer end and a plain bushing or smaller bearing near the crank side. Clipless pedals often have a more compact axle assembly, while older serviceable pedals may use loose ball bearings retained by a cone and locknut.
