How to fix a tubeless tire that won’t hold air overnight

A tubeless tire that looks properly inflated in the evening but feels soft by morning usually has a small, slow leak. The air may be escaping through a puncture, the valve, the tire bead, or a section of rim tape that no longer seals. Finding the exact route is more effective than repeatedly adding air and hoping fresh sealant will solve everything.

The repair is usually straightforward when approached systematically. Start with a clean inspection, isolate the leak, then choose the least invasive fix. A tire that loses a few psi over several days may need only more sealant, while a tire that becomes visibly flat overnight often points to a valve problem, damaged tape, or a bead that has never seated correctly.

Work in a well-lit area and remove the wheel from the bicycle if possible. Keep a pump, tire levers approved for tubeless use, soapy water, a valve-core tool, sealant, and a clean cloth nearby. Avoid using sharp metal tools around the rim because a small scratch can create a lasting sealing problem.

Why air disappears while the bike is parked

Sealant is designed to close small punctures as the tire rotates. When the wheel sits still, the liquid settles at the lowest point, leaving an upper puncture or porous section without enough sealant to plug it. This is why a tire can perform normally during a ride yet lose pressure overnight.

Some air loss is normal. Tubeless systems generally seep more air than an inner tube, especially during the first few days after installation. A gradual drop of a small amount is different from a tire that loses most of its pressure in eight hours. Rapid deflation indicates that air is passing through a larger opening or around a component that should be airtight.

Temperature also changes pressure. A cold garage can make a tire read lower in the morning, but temperature alone rarely turns a firm tire into a soft one. Check the tire at the same location and use the same pump gauge before assuming the pressure change is a leak.

Inspect the tire before adding more sealant

Inflate the tire to a moderate pressure, then rotate the wheel slowly. Listen for a hiss and inspect the tread, sidewalls, and bead line. A small puncture may release sealant bubbles, while a larger hole can produce a visible spray. If the tire has been completely flat, first check whether the bead has separated from the rim.

Spray or brush a mixture of dish soap and water around the tread, sidewalls, valve, and both bead edges. Escaping air creates growing bubbles at the leak location. Plain water can reveal some larger leaks, but soapy water is much more sensitive and avoids the guesswork involved in watching sealant alone.

Mark the leak with chalk or a small piece of removable tape. Then wipe away the soapy residue and inspect the area closely. A thorn, glass fragment, or small metal object may still be embedded in the casing. Remove it only after marking the location, since pulling it out can make a tiny puncture harder to find.

Refresh the sealant and check the casing

If the leak is a small tread puncture and the tire still contains liquid sealant, rotate and shake the wheel so the sealant coats the entire inside. Hold the wheel horizontally and move it in short arcs, giving extra attention to the puncture. Reinflate it, then repeat the process on the opposite side.

Sealant dries over time, particularly in warm climates or when a tire has been ridden frequently. Remove the valve core and use a sealant injector to add the quantity recommended by the manufacturer. Adding a small amount is safer than filling the tire with excessive liquid, which adds weight and can make future repairs messy.

If the sealant has formed a rubbery film or dry clumps, the tire should be removed and cleaned. Scrape away old residue gently with a plastic tool and wipe the rim bed and tire interior with a suitable cleaner. Never install fresh sealant over a thick layer of dried material, because lumps can prevent the tire bead from sitting evenly.

Check the valve and rim tape

The tubeless valve is a frequent source of slow overnight leaks. Remove the valve cap and inspect the core for dirt or a bent pin. Tighten the valve core with a valve-core tool, but do not force it. An overtightened or damaged core can leak just as readily as a loose one.

Next, check the rubber valve base inside the rim. The retaining nut should be snug against the rim, with the rubber base sitting flat on the rim tape. Hand-tighten the nut firmly, then give it a small additional turn with pliers only if necessary. Excessive force can deform the seal or damage the rim tape around the valve hole.

If bubbles appear beneath the rim tape or from spoke holes, the tape is failing. Remove the tire, clean and dry the rim, and replace the tape with the correct width. The tape should cover the complete rim bed without folding over the bead hooks. Start several centimeters before the valve hole, maintain firm tension, and finish with a generous overlap.

Reseat a leaking bead safely

A bead leak often appears as a line of bubbles around part of the rim. It can result from low pressure, dirt on the bead, an incompatible tire and rim combination, or a tire that has been stored folded for a long time. Deflate the tire, push both beads toward the center channel, and inspect the contact surfaces for grit or damaged rubber.

Clean the bead and rim with a damp cloth, then apply a small amount of tire-mounting lubricant or soapy water. Inflate with a high-volume pump or compressor while keeping the tire centered. The bead should rise evenly and make a series of snapping sounds as it locks into place. Keep fingers clear of the bead during inflation.

Never exceed the maximum pressure printed on the tire or rim. If the bead repeatedly refuses to seat, stop and verify compatibility rather than increasing pressure. A tire that fits loosely can be dangerous, while an excessively tight combination may damage the rim or make roadside removal impossible.

If the tire has a visible bulge, exposed casing threads, a split bead, or repeated failures in the same area, replace it. Sealant can close a hole, but it cannot restore the strength of a damaged tire casing.

Build a more reliable tubeless setup

After repairing the leak, inflate the tire and leave it on the bicycle overnight. Place the valve at the highest point before removing the pump so sealant does not escape through the valve. Rotate the wheel through several positions, then ride slowly for a few minutes to distribute the liquid across the casing.
