How to fix a sticky shift paddle on an integrated shift-brake lever
A sticky shift paddle can turn an otherwise smooth road bike into a frustrating machine. The lever may move only partway, fail to return after a shift, or require an uncomfortable amount of force. On an integrated shift-brake lever, commonly called an STI, Ergopower or shift-brake lever, the problem can come from the paddle itself, the cable system, or the derailleur at the other end.
Most cases are caused by dirt, dried lubricant, a kinked cable, crushed housing or a rubber hood pressing against the moving mechanism. The repair is usually manageable at home, but the brake function must remain completely separate from the shifting adjustment. A paddle that remains sticky after cleaning may indicate an internal spring or ratchet fault that needs professional attention.
Understand what is making the paddle stick
A mechanical integrated lever pulls an inner shift cable through a series of ratchets and springs. Pressing the small paddle usually releases cable tension or moves the cable to another position, while the derailleur spring provides much of the return force. Any resistance in the cable or housing can make the paddle feel slow or jammed.
The most common causes are contamination around the lever pivot, a cable that has begun to corrode, tight bends in the housing, or a frayed cable end catching inside the lever. A rubber hood that has slipped forward can also foul the paddle. Electronic groupsets use switches rather than a conventional shift cable. Diagnose the lever before removing parts

The hood should sit evenly around the body, without its edge touching the paddle or covering a pivot.
Operate the paddle while watching the rear derailleur. If the paddle feels sticky even when the cable is disconnected, the resistance is in the lever. If it moves normally without the cable but becomes stiff when connected, inspect the cable, housing and derailleur. This simple separation test prevents unnecessary disassembly of an expensive brake-shift unit.
For a hydraulic disc-brake system, keep all degreasers, lubricants and oily fingers away from the rotor, pads and caliper. Hydraulic brake fluid should never be drained merely to access the shift mechanism. If the lever has been contaminated with mineral oil or DOT fluid, cleaning the exterior may not be enough; a brake service could be required.

A small wooden pick can remove compacted dirt from a gap, but avoid using a metal tool that could scratch the lever or dislodge a spring. Never force the paddle through its full travel if it feels mechanically blocked.
Once clean, apply a very small amount of suitable light lubricant to an accessible pivot. One drop is usually enough. Work the paddle several times and wipe away any excess. Heavy grease attracts road dust, while silicone spray is better reserved for rubber care and should not be used as a substitute for proper lever lubrication.
If the paddle now returns crisply and the derailleur shifts correctly, refit the hood and test every gear. If the paddle still feels rough, the cable should be inspected next. A clean external lever cannot overcome a cable that is binding inside its housing.
Replace a cable or housing that is binding
Shift to the smallest rear sprocket and release cable tension as far as the lever allows. Note the cable routing before cutting anything. Remove the cable from the derailleur, then inspect it for rust, flattened sections, broken strands or a mushroomed end. A frayed cable should be replaced immediately because loose strands can jam inside the lever.
Run a new inner cable through the lever and housing, using new housing if it feels tight, cracked or contaminated. Housing should follow smooth curves without sharp loops. On compact road handlebars, avoid pulling the housing tight against the bar tape, stem or handlebar bend. A housing section that is only slightly too short can restrict the lever when the bars are turned.
Cut housing squarely with proper cable cutters and fit the correct ferrules. Do not use ordinary pliers, which crush the liner and create drag. Add a tiny amount of cable lubricant only when the cable or manufacturer permits it; many modern low-friction systems are intended to run dry. Excess lubricant attracts fine grit, especially on unsealed commuter bikes.
Warning signs that require a workshop
- The paddle remains locked after the cable is disconnected
- A spring, ratchet tooth or small retaining pin appears damaged
- The brake lever does not return fully or feels spongy
- Hydraulic fluid or oil has reached the pads or rotor
- The lever body is cracked or has been damaged in a crash
- An electronic paddle works intermittently after battery checks
Integrated levers contain small parts under spring tension, and replacement internals are not available for every model. A bicycle shop can often clean or rebuild a mechanical lever, but some sealed electronic and hydraulic units are replaced as complete assemblies. Reassemble and set up the shifting

Adjust the barrel in small increments if the chain hesitates or overshifts.

Check that the derailleur hanger is straight, the jockey wheels are clean and the chain is not severely worn. A bent hanger increases the force needed for accurate shifts and can make a marginal cable system feel much worse.
For electronic shifting, check the battery charge, inspect the wire or wireless connection and run the manufacturer’s diagnostic or firmware application if available. Do not open a sealed electronic lever unless the service instructions specifically allow it. Remove the battery before any work that could accidentally activate the motor or shift system.
Before riding, squeeze both brake levers firmly and confirm that the wheels stop without rubbing or fluid leakage. Turn the handlebar from lock to lock while operating the brakes and gears. The cables and housing must not tighten, pull on the lever or interfere with steering.
