How to clean corrosion off your bike’s chain and cassette
Surface rust on a bicycle chain or cassette is common after wet rides, winter storage, or exposure to road salt. A thin orange film may look serious, but it can often be removed with careful cleaning and lubrication. Heavier corrosion, however, can weaken components and interfere with shifting.
The best approach depends on the condition of the drivetrain. Light oxidation needs a degreaser, a brush, and fresh chain lubricant. Flaking rust, seized links, sharp burrs, and deeply pitted sprocket teeth are signs that cleaning may not restore reliable performance.
