How to Choose the Correct Chain Length for a New Cassette and Chainring Setup

Replacing a cassette and chainring together is a sensible way to refresh a worn drivetrain, but the job is not finished when the new parts are bolted on. The chain must be the correct length for the largest chainring, biggest cassette sprocket, rear derailleur capacity and frame geometry. A chain that is too short can damage expensive components, while one that is too long may shift poorly and slap against the chainstay.

The safest approach combines a sizing method with a careful drivetrain check. This matters whether you are fitting a 1x gravel setup, a mountain bike cassette for steep trails around the Blue Mountains, or a road drivetrain for long climbs in the Adelaide Hills. Chain length is determined by the complete setup, not by the number printed on the old chain box.

Check Compatibility Before Measuring

Start by confirming that the new chain matches the cassette and drivetrain speed. After cutting, route the chain through the jockey wheels and derailleur cage. A badly routed chain can appear too short or too long and may damage the derailleur.

Check The Small-Small Position

Once the chain is installed, shift it onto the smallest chainring and smallest cassette sprocket. The rear derailleur should retain enough tension to keep the lower run of chain controlled. A little cage movement is normal, but the chain should not hang loose beneath the chainstay.

A measurement can confirm the result when the old chain is missing or the frame has unusual geometry. Measure the chainstay from the centre of the bottom bracket to the centre of the rear axle. Record the tooth counts for the largest chainring and largest cassette sprocket.

A commonly used approximation is:

Chain length in inches = 2 × chainstay length + (largest chainring teeth + largest sprocket teeth) ÷ 4 + 1

Because standard bicycle chain pitch is half an inch, convert the result into chain links by dividing the length in inches by 0.5. Round to a whole link arrangement that suits the chain type and joining method. This formula is a useful check, but the big-big method is usually more reliable because it accounts for the actual frame and drivetrain.

Enter measurements carefully and check whether the calculator expects total links, pairs of links or chain length in inches. Before cutting, lay the new chain beside the bike and identify how it will be joined. Many modern chains use a reusable or single-use quick link, while others are joined with a manufacturer-specific connecting pin.
