What Worn Cassette Teeth Look Like

Healthy cassette teeth have a fairly symmetrical profile. Their tips may differ in shape from one sprocket to another because shifting ramps and pins are designed into the original machining, but the load-bearing sides should look even and defined. Dirt can make a cassette appear rough, so inspect it after degreasing and drying the drivetrain.

A worn sprocket often develops hooked or “shark-fin” teeth. Instead of rising evenly from the valley between teeth, the tip leans toward the direction in which the chain pulls.
