A dry or dirty pivot may produce a clicking or creaking sound, but noise is not the only warning sign. Excess friction can reduce suspension sensitivity, especially over small bumps. Routine pivot lubrication usually means applying a very small amount of grease to exposed hardware, seal lips, or approved contact surfaces—not filling the outside of a sealed bearing with oil. Many cartridge bearings are factory greased and protected by their own seals. Adding chain oil around them does little to improve their internal condition.
If the manufacturer permits external lubrication, place a thin film of suspension-safe or waterproof grease on a clean fingertip or lint-free cloth. Wipe it around the edge of the pivot seal or onto the specified axle surface. Avoid pushing grease into the seal gap. A visible bead is generally too much.

Recognize When Cleaning Is Not Enough
A pivot bearing that feels gritty, notchy, or loose generally needs replacement or a full service. With the rear wheel removed, move the swingarm slowly and pay attention to any rough spot. A rough sensation that remains after external cleaning points to internal bearing damage, contamination, or incorrect preload.
Creaking can come from several locations, including the seatpost, shock mounting hardware, headset, bottom bracket, or rear axle. Avoid assuming that every noise comes from the suspension linkage.
